EMILY J. SOVELL
Education & Experience
Emily received her Bachelor of Science from South Dakota State University in 1998, and her Juris Doctor from the University of South Dakota in 2001. During her schooling, she was a member of the South Dakota Law Review and a published case note writer. Emily finished law school as a Sterling Scholar, receiving a Dean’s Certificate recognition for scholastic honors; the Excellence for the Future Award presented by CALI; and West Group’s Outstanding Scholastic Achievement Award.
Immediately following law school, she was selected as a law clerk for the South Dakota Supreme Court. In 2002, following her clerkship, she went into private practice in Onida. In 2008, she opened a satellite office in Highmore, South Dakota. Full-time staff is maintained in Onida and Highmore.
Sully County State's Attorney
Emily has been elected State’s Attorney in Sully County, and is versed in criminal law through her part-time work as a public official, as well as many hours of defense during her early years of practice. Emily’s primary focus in private practice today is estate planning, transactional work and business law.
